I’ve been a Jet fan for 35 years now, I know what it is to have high hopes and have them crushed. It’s not pretty and I have learned to try and control my emotions. Better not to get too high, only to have a huge heartbreak. The Jets are great at that. Can this year be different?
Two weeks ago, during the first half of the Patriots game it really seemed that this Jets team could be different. They had just created a turn-over with a few minutes left in the first half and had a big lead, but they went three and out and the Patriots scored a quick touchdown at the end of the half. They then went into super conservative mode for the second half and almost figured out a way to lose the game. Luckily, they won the coins toss and thanks to some great play by Favre and the rest of the offense they won. Nothing to really change my mind. Yes they won, but were they really that good?
Last week was a different story. The Titans came into the game undefeated and while many pundits did pick the Jets to win, could we really have high hopes for the game? Did we really expect much from them? Well, they not only won, they destroyed the Titans in every phase of the game. During the 4th quarter, when it looked like the Titans might mount a come-back, the Jets created a turn-over, had some highlight-worthy offense plays and made all of the key stops. Are these Jets for real?
Tomorrow’s game will be an interesting test. Denver just lost to Oakland and is both bad against the run and doesn’t have much of a running game themselves. Both of these should be huge advantages for the Jets. While Denver, with Cutler and company, should be able to gain yards through the air, the Jets are improving each week against the pass and Denver did not manage any throwing TD’s last week. So it certainly seems like everything is on the Jets side. Right? It’s another test, and we’ll just have to see how they do. Are these the same Jets or a new, different team. Only time will tell.
beating denver will prove to their fans that having gone from zeroes to heroes in one year is no fluke and that they will make some noise come the playoffs. beating the teams you’re suppose to beat is a sure sign that it’s for real. J-E-T-S!
