Jets training camp to be held…

Somewhere other than Florham Park.

Credit Jane McManus from the Journal News for asking a few players yesterday during availability what they had heard regarding training camp. They disclosed it was their understanding that Rex Ryan had sent some team personnel on some recent reconnaissance missions to scope out different sites.

Today we learned two of the upstate locations the Jets have visited are SUNY Cortland and Cornell. And, in a story appearing in this afternoon’s Cortland Standard, SUNY Cortland talked about the Jets’ visit, which occurred last Friday.

“It was senior staff in logistics and operations,” college spokesman Pete Koryzno said in the article. “They were here for a couple of hours. The view from the stadium press box alone impressed them.”

(UPDATE: “They took their time and spent a few hours here,” Koryzno added in an interview Friday afternoon. “It was a pretty thorough visit. Hopefully we showed them what we hade to offer and hopefully they were impressed.”

That quote was included in a story I wrote earlier this afternoon. A Cornell spokesperson politely declined to comment, though a source confirmed the Jets had been there).

Jets spokesman Bruce Speight said Ryan is looking to get away in order to build team unity.

“Coach Ryan is looking to find a more isolated environment for training camp to promote team building and we are researching potential locations,” Speight said in a statement. “However, any plans will also include community events at our Atlantic Health Jets Training Center and in Long Island prior to the start of the regular season.”

I checked with Hofstra to see if there was an off chance the team was considering returning to its training camp home the previous 40 years, but have not yet heard back. A return there is unlikely, but I’ve been told it can’t yet be ruled out, either.

As an aside, I enjoyed some enjoyable June mornings, afternoons and nights at SUNY Cortland in my early days at Newsday (dating wayyy back to the fall of 2002) as I covered the state girls lacrosse finals at the university five straight years. There was a great Friendly’s across the street from the Holiday Inn I used to stay at. I, unfortunately, also learned today that the Jack Daniels’ steak house I used to frequent has closed.

However, more germane to the news of the day, the university has plenty of dorm space and field space to host an NFL training camp.

I have not yet checked with two of Newsday’s Cornell graduates, Neil Best or Chris Mascaro, for their reactions to the Jets possibly going there.

SUNY Cortland is just under four hours from the city and Ithaca - Cornell’s location - is a shade over four hours from the city.

The Jets are not commenting on specific locations being considered, though I was told that this decision has nothing to do with The Fort being unable, logistically, to host training camp. It’s a matter of Ryan simply wanting to get away.
