Thanks to our man at Jets Twit, we’re aware that Jets Third Round draft pick Kenrick Ellis has – in a surprising move – changed agents from Howard Shatsky.
Shatsky of course is the man who helped Ellis get drafted by the Jets due to his close ties with Parcells (and thus Tanny), and then waged an online PR war for his client based on some unfavorable press he received right after the selection.
Via Business Insider:
Ellis’ agent, Howard Shatsky of Pro Football Management, had to first convince teams that drafting Ellis was a smart move, and then deal with the media after he was selected. Very few people felt that Ellis would be taken as high as the third round, but largely thanks to Shatsky’s connections in the Jets organization, his one time client shot up the Jets draft board. After Ellis was selected, Shatsky went to war with the local New York media, specifically Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. Shatsky was not too happy about this particular Tweet.
But after all the time, money, and sweat spent on helping Ellis from pre-draft to just a few days ago, Ellis switched from Shatsky to Goal Line Sports.
Personally, I thought Shatsky’s public attack of Cimini was petty, and seemed rather thin-skinned for someone who’s been around the business as long as he has. Clearly I was not alone, and one of his fellow agents thought so too.
Regardless, it’s not the first time that a player has dropped his agent between the draft and signing with the team, but that’s the sort of thing that happens with guys like Andre Smith. Not exactly something that inspires a lot of confidence in the notion that his decision-making is getting better.
But whatever, the Jets didn’t draft the Ellis to feel bad for an agent who probably worked pretty hard to change perceptions around the league about his player – they drafted him to be create havoc to the interior of offensive lines and to take on double teams to free up his line-mates.
Right now, no one really knows the reasons why Ellis changed agents, it might have been that public dressing down of Cimini, but it might have been about something else altogether, or a combination of things. Shatsky might not be resonating with young players anymore, as evidenced by the fact that he doesn’t have any other clients that were picked so far in this draft class.
We might never know, but at the end of the day, it could be just another reason to raise an eyebrow at some of the choices that Ellis has made in his life, to date. Until now, his off-field decisions have been suspect, but we’ll wait to weigh it against what he can do on the field.
