Free Agent Focus: WR Reggie Wayne

reggie wayne of indianapolis 545 580x387 Free Agent Focus: WR Reggie Wayne

Recently Pro Football Focus released their list of the top 50 free agents in this year’s class.  In honor of that as we head to free agency next month, we’re going to focus on some of the players that the Jets might debate in their war room in the next month ..

Reggie Wayne
Position: Wide Receiver
Age: 33 Experience: 11
Height: 6’0″ Weight: 198 pounds

Why it might work: Wayne is the prototypical receiver size, and even though he’s getting a little older, can still contribute.  He might not be able to be a team’s primary target, as his numbers dipped in 2011 … but how much of that was due to working without Peyton Manning.  Wayne is a willing downfield blocker, is a great route runner and is aggressive with the ball in his hands.  Wayne is also very good at adjusting routes after the snap based on coverages, something that might be helpful if he was to work with Mark Sanchez.  Wayne’s game might be nearing an end, but he probably has enough left to be an offensive contributor on the Jets.

Why it might not work: Wayne has benefited from working with Peyton Manning, and because of that, it’s hard to expect what his offensive output would be with another QB.  We saw that he wasn’t nearly as effective a WR without Manning.  Coupling that fact with his age … would the Jets be setting themselves up for another Derrick Mason situation?  Wayne would be another short-term and potentially risky solution to an otherwise solvable problem with a young dynamic receiver.  Money and resources should be allocated elsewhere, and the Jets made to draft a playmaking and starting quality WR.
