It’s So Hard, to Say Goodbye

Rich Cimini posted some of the names that he believes to be on the chopping block this week for the Jets.   Here’s our guesses at the players and probabilities that they might be parted from the team at the end of this week.

DL Vernon Gholston – When Vernon re-did his contract, he graciously allowed the Jets a chance to better digest that python-choking contract.  Probability – 99%

NT Kris Jenkins – With a meaty .6 million savings, he’s the lowest hanging fruit for the Jets on the team.  It’s not likely Jenkins will forego his money willingly, which would precipitate the Jets cutting him before the week is out. Probability – 66%

OT Damien Woody — Rex said last week at the Combine that, to him, it’s optimal to not play rookies to get them acclimated.  With a .2 million savings to the Jets if they can cut Woody and move Ducasse into the RT spot … he could be a player the Jets decide to do without. Probability – 60%

OLB Bryan Thomas — Thomas had a decent year, and while Rex likes the versatility that Thomas brings, his .7 million cap savings might be more than the Jets can resist.  Probability – 50%

QB Mark Brunell — Will the Jets keep the aging Brunell .3 million backup QB another year?  He was a good influence on Sanchez, but might try to find a cheaper option they feel more confident in developing longer-term.  Probability – 45%

RB LaDainian Tomlinson — The Jets have said the respectable things about their veteran RB, but his distinct fade at the end of the 2010 season has to weigh on the Jets’ mind.  The question is whether the Jets feel that Shonn Greene can get off to a faster start and Joe McKnight is ready to contribute. Ripping off almost five yards per carry is one thing against the Bills, a whole other matter against the Steelers.  Probability – 33%

OLB Jason Taylor – Taylor has been elusive about what the future holds for him, and even alluded that returning to Miami wouldn’t be out of the question now that Parcells is gone.  With .2 million available for the Jets to clear, they might try and get younger, but I imagine they would wait ’til after the draft to address him specifically. Probability – 20%
