It was a rite of passage in Baltimore for year, and now Rex Ryan is bringing more than the tradition of just blitzing defenses to New York – Rex is bringing (un)sexy back in the form of the King Ugly contest.
Originally started by former Ravens coach Brian Billick 10 years ago, it’s a way for players, coaches and administrators to vote on who they think is the ugliest person in the franchise. The contest is expected to take place Wednesday night and it costs a dollar per vote.
“This a bumper crop this year,” Ryan said. “The bad thing is coaches are included and I’m going to put our general manager in there, as well. It’s one shot.”
No wonder why Ryan has been trying to lose weight on a liquid diet the past few weeks.
Perhaps the most anticipated competition of training camp is slated for a climax on Wednesday night, when Ryan conducts the “King Ugly” competition, something he’s brought with him from Baltimore, where former Ravens head coach Brian Billick started it.
The competition is a team vote (for per vote) on who the ugliest person in the organization is. Ryan playfully said his new team has a “bumper bumper crop” of potential winners.
“Coaches are included and I’m going to put our general manager (Mike Tannenbaum) in there as well,” Ryan said. “Third-place winner gets 75-percent of the money. Second-place winner gets 25-percent. The winner gets nothing. He’s so ugly he doesn’t deserve anything.
“You can throw a lot of money in there. If you really want somebody to win that award badly enough all you’ve got to do is put the cash out there.”
Awesome, funny and mean, but awesome. I honestly have no idea who’s going to win … I sure hope they make this public to the team.
