With the Jets offense flailing these past few weeks, the alignment of the football stars seem to suggest that if Schottenheimer is out, offensive line coach Bill Callahan will be in.
David Ferris thinks that Rex Ryan is trying to sell Schottenheimer to other teams:
Maybe it’s the power of suggestion at play. Perhaps Ryan feels that if he talks about Schottenheimer as a hot coaching candidate, the perception will become reality.
You can bet your Weeb Ewbank poster that Schottenheimer won’t get any offers to run an NFL club next year…[The] failure of the 2011 Jets offense (27th in total yards) and the flattening of Mark Sanchez’s development hasn’t been lost on the rest of the league…
If any other NFL team decides to interview Schottenheimer, for any opening, Ryan and the rest of the Jets should quietly say “thank you” under their breath. Meanwhile, continue to praise the man in public. You never know.
Rich Cimini is reporting that Callahan rejected a contract extension from the Jets. This may or may not be a good thing. Callahan is likely positioning himself to look for jobs as an offensive coordinator next year and doesn’t want to be locked in with the Jets. According to Ben Shpigel of The New York Times, the Jets will likely go with Callahan in order to maintain a somewhat stable environment around quarterback Mark Sanchez:
Elevating Callahan might not constitute as much of a shake-up as fans would prefer, but continuity is an essential component in the development of a young quarterback like Sanchez. If an outsider came in with a vastly dissimilar offense, he could do more harm than good to Sanchez. Sanchez is certainly not on the level of Tom Brady, who was unaffected by New England’s coordinator changes because the same system remained in place.
If that’s the case, and Callahan is aware of this, it’ll give him a whole lot of leverage once negotiations start. A lot of this depends on how badly Callahan wants to stay with the team.
