The Rundown: Is This Shaun Ellis’ Last Home Game?

shaunellis thumb The Rundown: Is This Shaun Ellis’ Last Home Game?

In the last eleven seasons, the Jets have had five head coaches, six defensive coordinators, and during that time, Shaun Ellis has been a mainstay of the Jets defense.  Since 2000, Shaun Ellis has only played less than 15 games once.  An incredible feat for a player who is in the maelstrom play after play.

While he doesn’t often get a lot of accolades or attention, he’s been a big boost to this fluctuating team, and has – I think – rarely gotten the credit that he deserves, which comes as part of his position.  Granted, as a 3-4 DE he’s not a “game changer” in the classic sense, but I do think that an integral part of any 3-4 defense is stout linemen who can pinch to tackle or play the end spot, stuff the run, and provide some doubles to get their linebackers free hits to the QB.  Over his career, Shaun has done that and much more.

This year, right before the draft and even into May, rumors flew that the Jets might release Ellis or try to trade him.

The Jets have invited trade offers for Shaun Ellis in the past few months, but have not found any takers, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak on behalf of the Jets or Ellis.

The 32-year-old Ellis, the longest tenured Jet, was denied a contract extension, according to the person. The veteran defensive end is due to make .35 million in the final year of his contract.

Remember, the Jets and Ellis are at the end of their deal.  Assuming a new CBA gets worked out, he’s a free agent after this season, and the Jets will more than likely have other, higher priorities before signing the veteran player.

Like many veterans, Ellis is struggling to stay healthy, and this weekend would represent a “bye” for him before the Jets likely head to Kansas City for the playoffs.

“I’m anticipating playing until I get further notice,” Ellis said. “Anytime you have the chance to play you should play.”

Ellis said the injury occurred during Sunday’s 38-34 loss on a play in which he got bent back the wrong way and “it didn’t feel good at all.” He was able to finish the game out, though.

Ellis has started all 15 games for the Jets this season and has 4.5 sacks on the year. He said he feels good but is trying to get rested up.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan is erring on the side of caution.

Said Ryan: “If it doesn’t get any better, clearly he won’t play as well.”

So while I understand that the Jets need to rest their veteran DL for the playoffs, I’m also somewhat sad to hear that he might not get a chance to play in what might amount to the final home game he could see as a New York Jet.

Even if he’s not able to play, I do hope that the Jets find a way to honor him for his long tenure with the Jets as the “Dean” of the defense.
