Let’s face it … 2010 has been a bats*** crazy year to be a Jets fan … but hey … who could ask for anything more!?
While Rex and I might have the same One Goal for each and every season, I do have one teeny tiny other goal — to be entertained. In that regard, 2010 was has been a freaking goldmine. Here’s a quick rundown of what some of our picks for the top stories of 2010 have been, in semi-chronological order. Add your thoughts or suggestions if we missed any in the comments.
The Postseason Run – At 9-7 last year, there was lots of talk about how the Jets didn’t deserve to be in the playoffs, but they quieted the doubters by winning two road games against both the surging Bengals and the amazing pass offense of the Chargers. The Jets came within 30 minutes of a Super Bowl berth when they lost Shonn Greene during the game against the Colts while Peyton Manning did what he did best during the second half, precipitating Tannenbaum and Ryan to hatch a plan for taking this team to the next level in 2010.
A Few Big Changes – As the team headed into free agency hampered by CBA rules in an uncapped year tied to their postseason success, they had an impressive offseason bounty, netting LaDainian Tomlinson, Jason Taylor, the trades for Antonio Cromartie & Santonio Holmes. Still there was concern about a changing element of the team moving away from some more stable core players like Thomas Jones, Alan Faneca, Leon Washington and Jay Feely. While the level of talent on the 2010 team was without equal in my recent memory, it did come with some costs – risk management as Mike Tannenbaum would like to put it.
Opening A New Stadium – Since their inception, the Jets have always played in someone else’s home. While their new domicile is a duplex, it doesn’t lessen the fact that they own it. This new state of the art facility has been a source of pride for many of the fans, while it’s been a wedge for others. Many threaded storylines like PSLs, the new parking castes, concern over TV blackouts, the Giants/Jets feud over opening the new stadium and the “coin flip” have come from this larger story.
The Darrelle Revis Holdout – This story took hostage of the headlines from June to September. Coming off one of the single greatest seasons for a corners ever, Darrelle Revis and the Jets were eager to renegotiate a new deal, but both sides willingness devolved over the dollars, and left many a Jets fan wondering whether this season would be put in jeopardy over a season long holdout. Both sides played nice, both sides played dirty, but on the verge of the season, both sides came to agreeable terms. Of course, the story didn’t end there, as Revis needed much of the first half of the season round into his healthy and consistent form.
Hard Knock Jets – Jets fans gained unparalleled insight into their team. The Jets weren’t hiding anything from the NFL Films crew, who documented much of the “behind the scenes” moments of training camp for HBO. This allowed for us fans to see private moments be they the negotiations of Darrelle’s deal, Tannenbaum’s utter disconsolation leaving the Roscoe Diner, on the cajoling Kellen Clemens into staying with the Jets at a cut rate, or on finding role players to fill the last handful of roster spots. While it was trenchant, it was also amusing, showing us Patron Saint Joe Namath cracking wise, Mark Sanchez’s affinity for rainbow micturating unicorns, or Jason Taylor’s tardiness.
Brick & Nick Get New Deals – Other than the Darrelle Revis contract mess, one of the other biggest fears for fans was the impending free agency of Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson. With the current CBA set to run out next spring, there was concern that the Jets would lose two of their cornerstones of their success on the offensive line. Working on those two deals, and the players’ willingness to be creative in their payment, has allowed the Jets to keep the core of this team intact for quite a while.
All the Off Field Drama – I don’t even want to get into all of it – but because of tabloid fodder like Braylon’s DUI, the Ines Sainz incident, and Sal Alosi’s trip (just to name a few) – it’s been an embarrassing year for the Jets and their fans from a PR perspective. The Jets braggadocio has come with a price, and we’ve seen (let’s hope) more than a year’s worth of it in 2010.
Jim Leonhard’s Injury – Not to belittle other injuries to other players on the team, but nothing seemed to take the wind out of the Jets sails more than this injury this year. While he might be one of the smallest players on the roster, Leonhard was the signal caller for the secondary, was a tenacious player, and helped implement and lead Ryan’s defense. Since his absence, the Jets have struggled to regain their identity in the secondary, despite solid play by both starting CBs.
